BG3 Adamantine Forge Guide: All 6 Moulds, Mithral & Grym
Complete Baldur's Gate 3 Adamantine Forge guide — all 6 mould locations, both Mithral Ore veins, how to use the forge, and the easy hammer strategy to kill Grym.
Quick Answer
The Adamantine Forge in the Grymforge crafts some of the best Act 1 gear. Collect all 6 moulds scattered around the Grymforge (Longsword, Shield, Scimitar, Splint Armor, Mace, Scale Mail), mine both Mithral Ore veins near the Ancient Forge waypoint by shooting them with a bow, then place a mould in the mould chamber and Mithral Ore in the crucible. This summons Grym — make him stand in lava to apply Superheated (bludgeoning vulnerability), then shoot the lever to drop the forge hammer on him for massive damage.

The Adamantine Forge crafts gear strong enough to carry you to the end of the game — if you can find the moulds, mine the Mithral, and survive Grym. This guide covers all three from start to finish.
Short Answer
In the Grymforge, collect all 6 Adamantine moulds (Longsword, Shield, Scimitar, Splint Armor, Mace, Scale Mail), then mine both Mithral Ore veins near the Ancient Forge waypoint by shooting them with a bow. Place a mould in the mould chamber and Mithral Ore in the crucible to start crafting — this summons Grym, the Guardian of the Forge. Make Grym stand in lava to apply Superheated (bludgeoning vulnerability), then shoot the lever to drop the forge hammer on him for massive damage. Repeat until he dies, then loot the Grymskull Helm and your crafted item.
Key Takeaways
- There are 6 moulds in the Grymforge — most are reachable just by jumping (a Strength-based character helps).
- There are exactly 2 Mithral Ore veins, both near the Ancient Forge waypoint; shoot them with a bow to mine.
- Each craft needs 1 mould + 1 Mithral Ore: mould → mould chamber, ore → crucible.
- Crafting summons Grym, who only takes (extra) damage while Superheated from standing in lava.
- The fight is trivial with the hammer strategy: pull Grym onto the hammer plate and shoot the lever.
- Loot the Grymskull Helm and remember to pull the mould lever again to eject and keep your mould.
Where Are All 6 Adamantine Forge Moulds?
All six moulds are scattered around the Grymforge and most can be reached by jumping — no Misty Step required. Start at the Grymforge waypoint and head up the stairs. A higher-Strength character clears the gaps more easily.
| Mould | Notes |
|---|---|
| Longsword | First pickup, on a tablet near the start |
| Shield | Behind a door you unlock; on a skeleton inside |
| Scimitar | Past a lockpicked door, further back |
| Splint Armor (heavy) | Reached by a drop that costs a little HP |
| Mace | Near the waypoint area |
| Scale Mail (medium) | Guarded — clear the enemies, then loot it |
Once you’ve looted the last one you should have all six moulds in your inventory.
Where Do You Find Mithral Ore?
There are two Mithral Ore veins, both near the Ancient Forge waypoint — shoot them with a bow to mine. From the staircase by the forge, look for a rock you can shoot open with a bow to expose and collect the ore. A few Magma Mephits spawn when you do — clear them, then extract the ore.
The second vein is reached by returning to the Ancient Forge signal and dropping down past more enemies; shoot it the same way. Two veins = enough Mithral to craft two items.
How Do You Use the Forge and Kill Grym?
Place a mould in the mould chamber and Mithral Ore in the crucible, then beat Grym with the hammer. Click the mould chamber and drag in a mould; click the crucible and drag in your Mithral Ore. Before you start, position your party:
- Put your healer (Shadowheart) near the mould chamber.
- Put your mage (Gale) on the mould chamber so he pulls Grym’s aggro.
- Keep your other characters to the side so they can shoot the lever and lava valve with bows.
Starting the craft summons Grym. Shoot the lava valve to flood the plate with lava — Grym only takes (bonus, bludgeoning) damage while Superheated, which requires him standing in the lava. Aggro him onto the hammer plate, confirm he’s still Superheated (re-shoot the valve if not), then shoot the lever to drop the hammer for huge damage. Repeat until he’s dead, clear the remaining mephits, and loot the Grymskull Helm, your crafted gear, and — importantly — pull the mould lever again to eject your mould so you keep it.
FAQ
How many Adamantine Forge moulds are there?
Six: Longsword, Shield, Scimitar, Splint Armor (heavy), Mace, and Scale Mail (medium). All are found around the Grymforge.
Where is Mithral Ore in Baldur’s Gate 3?
There are two Mithral Ore veins, both near the Ancient Forge waypoint in the Grymforge. Shoot the rock/vein with a bow to mine them. Two veins is enough for two crafted items.
How do you kill Grym in BG3?
Make Grym stand in lava to apply Superheated (bludgeoning vulnerability), lure him onto the hammer plate, then shoot the lever to drop the forge hammer on him. A few hammer hits end the fight.
How do you get more lava to craft a second item?
Shoot the lava valve again to refill the plate — that’s also how you re-apply Superheated to Grym. With both Mithral veins mined you have material for two crafts.
Do you lose your mould after crafting?
No — after crafting, pull the mould lever again to eject the mould and pick it back up. Don’t leave it behind; you can reuse it.
What does Grym drop?
The Grymskull Helm, plus whatever Adamantine item you crafted in the forge.
